Transform high-crash arterial roads into Vision Zero Great Streets

The Great Streets program redesigns major corridors to prevent crashes, enhance mobility, increase accessibility, and bolster neighborhood vitality. The following projects are underway: Atlantic Ave. and Fourth Ave. in Brooklyn; the Grand Concourse in the Bronx; and Queens Blvd. in Queens. In addition, DOT is implementing Vision Zero capital redesigns on other major streets, including Delancey St. in Manhattan and Tillary St. in Brooklyn.

In the past year, DOT made significant progress on all four Great Streets projects.

  • Queens Boulevard: In-house safety improvements in temporary materials are completed from Roosevelt to Yellowstone Blvd. The City continues the design process for the capital project (with funding for the section of Queens Blvd from Roosevelt Avenue to Yellowstone Blvd).
  • Grand Concourse: DOT implemented safety redesign from 138th to 158th Streets. Construction of the capital project Phase II was substantially completed in October 2017. The City started construction of Phase III in December 2017. Design is currently underway for Phase IV, which included a public workshop in January 2017.
  • Atlantic Avenue: The City started construction of the capital project Phase I in Fall 2017 (Georgia Avenue to Logan Street). Preliminary design is on-going for the Phase II (Logan Street to Rockaway Blvd).
  • 4th Avenue: DOT proposed the addition of protected bike lanes along the corridor, combined with safety improvements. The City extended the limits for the capital project Phase I, from 8th to 65th Streets and continues the design process. Final design of the raised medians and subway vents will start early 2018.
