Transform areas under elevated transportation infrastructure into attractive public spaces and streetscapes through the El-Space program

DOT will conduct an inventory of el-spaces, develop an El-Space toolkit of design treatments, and initiate six El-Space pilot projects, some in partnership with the Design Trust for Public Space. The project will include a consideration of opportunities for secure bike parking.

Update Description

DOT will develop an El-Space toolkit of design treatments. DOT will implement six El-Space pilot and demonstration projects at Sunset Park/Gowanus Exwy, Far Rockaway, Jerome Ave,  Livonia Ave, Jamaica Ave, and Long Island City.


In 2017, DOT developed an El-Space toolkit of furnishings and is designing and implementing seven El-Space pilots citywide as part of the effort’s Phase II. The first El-Space pilot in Sunset Park is slated for implementation in February 2018; the Brooklyn Bridge Arches El-Box will open to the public in January 2018. Four of the remaining DOT El-Space pilots will be implemented in the spring/summer of 2018. The final Phase II pilot at Van Sinderen Avenue in Brooklyn  is anticipated to be implemented by the end of 2018 in advance of the capital project planned along the corridor.

DOT will expand the El-Space Program to additional sites as funding becomes available.

DOT will complete an El-Space asset inventory.
